What Is an Intensive Driving Course and Is It Right for Me?

Eager to get your driving licence fast? You’ve probably come across the idea of intensive driving courses. But how do they work, and more importantly, is it the right option for you?
Let’s explore everything you need to know about intensive driving lessons, especially if you're based in Bath and Somerset, Bristol, Cornwall, Dorset, or Wiltshire.

What Is an Intensive Driving Course?

An intensive driving course, sometimes known as a ‘crash course’ (ironically named, we promise), is a fast-track way to learn how to drive and pass your test, often within just one to two weeks.

Instead of spreading your lessons out over several months, you take multiple hours of training every day. The idea is simple: immerse yourself in driving, build up your muscle memory quickly, and absorb everything more effectively because you’re not having gaps between sessions.

At 2nd2None Driving School, we offer intensive driving lessons in both manual and automatic cars, tailored to your schedule and level of experience.

How Do Intensive Driving Courses Work?

Our intensive driving courses are designed around you. Whether you’re a complete beginner or someone who has some previous experience and needs polishing up, there’s a course to suit your needs.

Here’s a rough idea of how it works:

  1. Initial assessment (optional but recommended). We can assess your current skill level and recommend the ideal number of hours.

  2. Choose the duration of your course. Courses typically range from 10 to 48 hours, spread across 2 to 10 days depending on your needs.

  3. Test booking included. We handle your practical test booking, aiming to schedule it towards the end of your course.

  4. Learn from DVSA-approved instructors. All our instructors are fully qualified and experienced in delivering intensive courses.

We offer pick-up from your home, workplace or a local train station across all the areas we cover, including Bath, Somerset, Bristol, Cornwall, Dorset, and Wiltshire.

Is an Intensive Driving Course Right for Me?

This is the big question, and the answer depends on your lifestyle, learning style, and personal goals. It might be a good choice for you if:

  • You need your licence quickly, whether for work, school or a move abroad. Intensive lessons can get you test-ready in as little as a week.

  • You have time off. Got a gap between school or uni terms? Taking annual leave from work? That’s the perfect window for an intensive course.

  • You learn best by being fully immersed. If you prefer diving in and learning by doing rather than waiting a week between lessons, you’ll benefit hugely.

  • You want to save money in the long run. Traditional lessons can add up over time. While intensive courses seem pricey upfront, you often need fewer total hours.

However, it might not be the best choice if:

  • You’re juggling a hectic schedule.  If you can’t commit to several hours of driving per day for a full week, a weekly lesson might suit you better.

  • You learn better with slow repetition.  Some learners benefit from taking longer breaks between lessons to process information.

  • You easily get overwhelmed. Intensive driving can be mentally intense. If you’re not used to learning under pressure, a slower pace could be better.

Manual vs Automatic: Which Should You Choose?

We offer both manual and automatic intensive courses. Here’s how to decide:

Manual:

  • Gives you a full licence (you can drive both manual and automatic vehicles)

  • Slightly cheaper cars to buy and insure

  • Better for future flexibility, especially if you plan to drive abroad

Automatic:

  • Ideal for learners who struggle with clutch control or gear changes

  • Lessons can feel less stressful, especially in busy cities like Bristol or Bath

  • Pass rates are often slightly higher with automatics, especially for nervous drivers

If you’re not sure, we’re happy to talk through the pros and cons based on your experience and goals.

Areas We Cover

We run intensive driving courses across the South West of England. If you're in or near any of these areas, we’ve got you covered:

  • Bath and Somerset, an area with city roads, countryside lanes, and dual carriageways, so you will enjoy a variety of conditions.

  • Bristol, where you can learn to handle heavy traffic, roundabouts, and multi-lane roads with confidence.

  • Cornwall. Ideal if you prefer quieter roads or are staying somewhere more rural.

  • Dorset. From coastal routes to town centres, you’ll gain broad driving skills.

  • Wiltshire. Smaller towns and open country roads mean you will learn in a myriad of environments.

Wherever you’re based, our local instructors know the test routes and conditions inside-out.
